DOGI: KARATE UNIFORM (KARATE-GI)
A) How to treat your Karate-Gi (Dogi)
B) Which Dogi to choose?
C) How to purchase Japanese Dogi
A
The best way to keep your Karate uniform is...
1) After the training, wash immediately in body temperature water. If stinky, soak your uniform in Borax/washing soda. Leave it over night. Washing soda/crystals remove the odor. Borax will brighten the material. They are dead cheap and readily available from Bunnings, supermarkets, online and health shops. For cotton uniforms, it is better to wash in cold water as they shrink easily.
2) Wash in normal cycle. If you do not have a high quality dogi, use gentle cycle. Cold/warm water.
3) For cotton uniforms, you may use fabric softer/Borax.
3) Allow to dry it naturally. Avoid using dryer as it makes them shrink.
4) When it is dried, iron it thoroughly.
IMPORTANT - Belts are NOT suppose to be washed. Leave them dry. They shrink enormously otherwise. Do not leave them wet in your bag as it can get mouldy. Once it gets too smelly, you can soak it in colour safe detergent for delicate fablics. Add tea tree oil if they have grown moulds.
Come to dojo with clean ironed uniforms. If you are not a big fan of ironing, synthetic Dogi (Such as Hirota Pinack Kumite or GHQ Excel Kumite) is recommended as they keep their shape even after washing. Kata uniforms require ironing to make them look sharp. If your pants/sleeves are too long, please mend them. Over-sized uniform can be very dangerous if your legs/hands get caught during the movements.
Remember - how you present yourself, influences your character. So always aim for the best! NEVER come with yellow/brown/smelly uniforms to the classes. It is to show respect to your class mates as well.
Treatment of stains:
Use SOLVOL to remove any stains. (Follow the instruction on the label) If still does not remove, use DOMESTOS as the last resort. Use a brush to spread in the area you want to bleach. Normal bleach somehow makes the uniform yellow but Domestos does not. Wash immediately as it will damage the material. Use fabric softner/Borax afterwards. Some body deodorants stain the uniform. Research which one does not.

Karyukai sells local brand karate-gi of a reasonable quality. Karyukai members can purchase them from the store page. (click)
Once you begin to get serious with regular training, you probably want to get a few uniforms. It is also essential to wear a good uniform if you wish to compete. Appearance does count in your presentation.
There are many brands of Karate-Gi from all over the world. Karyukai recommends Japanese dogi because they last for a long time (minimum of 3 years using minimum of once a week.) They maintain the shape and have strong endurance.
There are Kumite Dogi and Kata Dogi. Kumite ones are lighter and looser. Kata Dogi are firmer and often heavier (some synthetic onces are very light). They are designed to make good sounds when you are making kime.
When buying your dogi, you must be very careful with what size you order. Each brand has different size system. For example, a person of size 2.5 in Shureido is often size 3.5-4 in Hirota or GHQ-Hisho. Japanese brands such as Hirota and GHQ-Hisho have slim cut pants. When ordering those brands, it is better to write 2-3 cm wider than you normally order. If you have a stocky figure, you can never go wrong with Shureido as its pants are very wide.
Pure cotton ones shrink in size so please do not worry if they appear too big at start.
Usually, prices differ accordingly to currency exchange of the time, your size, material of your choice and selections of your embroideries.
If you want to buy a quality uniform, Japanese brands are highly recommended. You can buy Tokaido, Hirota and Tokyo International uniforms directly from the link:

Pure cotton ones are heavy and require ironing but they absorb sweat well. But they do not last long.
Synthetic ones [such as Hisho's Excel and Shureido's New Wave] do not shrink and easier maintenmaintain.
