Located in the inner city, Karyukai Karate is a club where Japanese tradition is valued. The utter most focus is to develop respect - to everything we encounter: venues, clothes, people and ultimately ourselves. We are fortunate to have dedicated and super friendly members. Everyone trains hard with passion and determination. We have lot of fun together with well balanced seriousness. Once you start training, it is simply addictive! It is a wholesome experience as much as physical one. You learn new things all the time and there is a sense of growth and respect. You get fit, mentally balanced and energised. The community is warm, welcoming and people feel supported!

Karyukai is also known for its high standard. We train every year in Japan and the quality of the training is authentic and maintains its traditional values. All the instructors are driven by passion and their energy makes you want to learn more.

What is Karate?

 Karate is a Japanese martial art born in the island of Okinawa. Taking its history aside, Karate training strong focus on developing skills using kicks and punches. 

There are many styles of Karate but 4 styles are considered to be traditional Karate (Goju, Shito, Wado and Shotokan). Every style has slightly different training emphasis and one of the characteristic of Shotokan is the dynamic movements with long fighting distance. It is perhaps the most widely spread style internationally. So if you change a location, it is most likely that you can continue to train the same style of Karate.

What do I need to start Karate?

You do not need previous experience. All you need is your willingness to try. Shotokan is known for dynamic movements so you will get fit very quickly.

Everyone is asked to cut all of the nails short and remove any jewellery for safety reasons.

Our mixed level kids classes (1hr-2hrs) are generally suited for children aged between 7-12. Preparatory class (45min)is designed for absolute beginners (can be younger than 6 if they are ready) to gain coordination, manners and basic Karate words. Once they get serious, they can move towards mixed level classes. Our senior classes are open to people from teenagers to adults of all ages.


How often should I train?

It is highly recommended to train minimum of twice a week to make a steady progress. You can join classes at home via zoom on the days you can not travel.

When shall I come for a trial?

Sooner the better! Do not let your fear hold you back. Try out when your curiosity began. Make sure to book so that you will not come on the day which is not open to trial (such as grading). Trial class is free of charge.

What is the class like?

There will be someone showing you the dojo protocols, such as how to bow, sit and stand.

We start our classes with ZOKIN GAKE: cleaning our dojo floor. Karate is done on barefoot so safety and cleanliness are essential. The cleaning also has two other importance: fitness and respect. Going down and up on your knees can make you sweat immediately.Cleaning is also considered as demonstration of our respect to the venue.​

We go through thorough warm up routine consists of dynamic stretching, cardio, balance, breathing and body awareness.

Then we move on to the class with basics and it develops into contents of different topics in each lesson.
